Colleen Regan 9/26/2018 3:48 PMFor this challenge, I watched a video of David Korten give a speech titled "Change the Story, Change the Future" about overconsumption, inequality, and how structural changes to our economy need to occur in order to build a sustainable future. One of the most interesting parts of his speech to me was when he went into his history in international development as a young man, and his realization that the cultural and institutional shift he brought to the countries he visited in the name of development essentially worked as a reinstitutionalization of colonization. He elaborated that the control of money or the means of living was increasingly being transferred into the hands of global corporations that were in turn increasingly consolidating their power. He framed his argument for restructuring our economy within the context of changing the story, of working to organize around community rather than the accumulation of money and growth.
