I had originally decided to do an evaluation of the energy audit in my apartment, but then realized I do not have the information I needed to complete this. So, I decided to create a rainwater collection station for outdoor watering needs at my mothers place. I searched everywhere to find 50 gallon barrel to set up in her backyard and finally found one at my uncles house. He used it for holding compost but decided to make a section of his garden at the corner of his fence to be the compost pile. I took the barrel, washed it out, cleaned it thoroughly, and set it up at the top of the sloped grass in my moms backyard. I drilled a hole for a spigot and attached a valve and a hose. It started working immediately, thanks rain :)

I decided to really buckle down and buy only what I needed for this week. I started keeping a small notebook in my pocket and wrote down what I needed for food and stayed away from buying things that were not specific
for sustenance. I found that when I did not buy ice cream and chips and other little snacky items I saved money, which is logical. It was also another reminder to be mindful of what I eat and how I can eat more healthily. By buying only what I needed to make meals I needed to be more discerning in my choices. It was a good practice, and is one I will work to continue strengthening.

I am late for posting about Week 6. I decided to walk each day this week. The martial arts studio I train at is about a mile from my apartment. I usually drive there and back with all the rain. This week I walked, and got very wet. Like. Super wet. It felt really good to walk each day, I have not walked as much as I used too, yet, it is harder to want to in the rain. I will continue to do so moving forward.

This is something that I feel is very important. Living in NW Portland there is a lot of trash on the streets, even more so with the large houseless camp about two blocks away from my apartment. It saddens me to see people in that state, and I have compassion, yet, the amount of trash is terrible. I clean up the trash in from of my apartment every day when I come home from work or school. However, for this weeks eco challenge, I will clean up the litter around my block and try and rope in my neighbors to join me. I might even try and get a neighborhood cleanup organized.

this week, I will start changing the way I get my food from the store. I will start using mason jars for my bulk food items and getting food that is not contained in plastic. I will not buy meat that is in plastic, I will go to the deli and get my meat that way, usually they wrap it in paper, which can then be recycled. It will be harder to convince my partner to do this a well because she is not the mot earth conscious, which is a stressor between us.

This week I decided eat all organic food and stay away from processed foods. I went to New Seasons (which I usually try and avoid due to prices being much higher) and picked up a bunch of veggies and and some ethically raised chicken, quinoa, coos coos, brown rice, and a tub of peanut butter crushed from the machine. I ended up eating less than I normally do, which went well with me taking a week of from exercising, so I did not need as many calories.
It was a little difficult to eat less, as I am used to eating a lot with my training, but I am glad I did it. I used a couple new recipe's I found online.

This was a tricky one to calculate the amount of time I spent outside. I work for an arborist company maintaining the health of trees and plants. I am outside all the time. Not only do I love my job, but I am helping the trees and plants become healthier and flourish. I go on walks daily with my cats (They are halter trained), and run twice a week through forest park. I love being outside, the fact that we are here on this planet is a constant source of amazement for me.

For this challenge, I decided to go hiking through Tryon Creek Nature Park. Although I have lived in Portland my whole life, I have never wandered the paths of the forest. I love hiking, and have hiked almost all of the hikes in the Gorge, yet there are still quite a few places I have yet to explore in Portland. It is a goal of mine to go explore a new nature away at least once a week.
