Lauren Kerr 11/21/2022 11:09 AMLast week I went to the Wild & Scenic Film Festival hosted by Willamette Riverkeeper in Portland. It featured short films by activists, environmentalists, and tribal groups. It was interesting to learn about what various regions are experiencing like the historic salmon population decline in the Klamath River. One film portrayed the Yurok Tribe's dependence on salmon for food and well-being. It also brought up the Klamath River Fish Kill of 2002 when 34,000 fish died on the river. I had never heard of this tragic event and it was interesting to hear Yurok Tribe members discuss how they see fish and wildlife as family. There was an immense amount of grief that came along with the loss of so many fish. Seeing this shed a different light on the potential relationship that I could have with wildlife around me.
