To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Bernice Almeida 11/05/2023 6:56 PMWhy did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
I chose this challenge because I wanted to challenge the way I moved about in the world. I wanted to create habits that bettered myself and the world around me. I was instilled with values as a child that the Earth is ours to care for. As I see devastating news about the state of the planet, I wanted to do my part in bettering the situation. I chose actions that were easy to complete on a day-to-day basis but still challenged me to do the right thing in an everyday situation. I also wanted to increase my appreciation for nature, taking time to enjoy the world around me. I believe this challenge has allowed me to change many habits and my perspective as well. It is hard to better our actions but it is necessary if we want our impact to be positive. -
Bernice Almeida 10/22/2023 8:31 PM1. Are you progressing at the expected rate? Why or why not?
I believe I am progressing at my expected rate, I understood that I would have some issues with changing my habits. Therefore, I think that I am progressing steadily but sometimes I make certain mistakes: forgetting to recycle, forgetting to turn off the sink water while brushing my teeth, and small acts as such. However, I do believe I am getting better at appreciating nature, I often find myself enjoying the bits of nature and silence whenever I can.
2. Have any unforeseen challenges arisen or has it been easier than expected?
There were challenges, but they were not unforeseen. The challenges are the same that often arise whenever I try to change a habit, I relapsed without knowing and breaking the habit. I recognized that rather than feeling guilty, I needed to focus on maintaining these sustainable habits. -
Bernice Almeida 10/13/2023 12:20 AMIndependent Women—Destiny’s Child, SurvivorI chose independent women as I feel it shows support for Friedman's theory. The song emphasizes the power of financial control and independence, pushing women especially to become profitable and financially secure. This coincides with Friedman's logic of profit over everything, which is evident in the song's push to make women more financially successful. -
Bernice Almeida 9/27/2023 4:08 PMI chose the actions I focused on because I wanted to set realistic goals for bettering myself and the impact I make. Growing up, there were many cultural values that instilled that humans' role on this planet is to take care of it. It is not our role to take advantage of and abuse the natural world because this is our home too. I feel that I have fallen from that value and I chose actions that would help me better myself. I want to make a better impact on the natural world and take care of my home. People often forget that being sustainable is more than saving trees, it is clearing up our neighborhoods, and caring for our communities and for the animals and people in it.
I wanted to focus on being a better person, and recognizing how my choices impact the world. I want to create a cleaner community for my family and friends. I want more than polluted streets or small corner parks as a part of my natural world. I recognize that I need to step up in order to play a greater role in facilitating that change. -
Bernice Almeida 9/15/2023 7:46 PMHi, I am Bernice. This year, I am trying to become a more sustainable person by altering my habits. Currently, I always recycle, try to reduce how many paper towels I use, and try to use reusable kitchenware as opposed to plastic.
