I looked at my recycling, composting, and other waste containers. Based on what I have observed (plastic waste is the most), I decided to shop for products with fewer plastic containers, and plastic waste. It is difficult as plastic packaging is popular and widely used. I shopped at the market nearby where I could use my bags however the veggie and fruit products were bad quality due to the many crises currently happening. It is very difficult and I met day by day the systemic issue and the interconnectedness of the many societal and environmental issues. I live in Budapest, Hungary. I think context is also an important aspect.

I review the ecochallenge goals here on the website and I write a post to most of them, when accomplishing. Therefore, right now I think that I don't need to make a sustainability journal in Notion but use these weekly reviews as my sustainability journal. Advantage is that I'll write weekly, constantly. My concern is that I'll loose some important thought that may occure during the week or thought for which I do not have signed up for a goal on Ecochallenge. I'll think about a solution. Maybe in Notion I can start a journal as part of my Búza project.

I had 2 conversations where I shared my career ambitions in sustainability. I noticed that I tend to get lost in explaining details and I feel like I loose my conversation partner because of this. I received an advice to approch such conversations from a larger perspective, less about details. I also noticed that nowaadays, I don't spend much time explaining the "why" of the importance of sustainability and my choices coming from it. However, I do struggle explaining the "how" and "what" part of it to people who are not familiar daily in this topic. I'll spend some time to work in this to make myself and others more comfortable in conversations like this.

There are many awareness raising events in Budapest. I have been following community spaces for the younger generation and I've noticed that there are several civil organizations that are active in organizing awareness-raising, teaching events. The next one I attend will be tomorrow at Gólya, which is a community space. There will be a movie screening of "Taming The Garden" and a discussion after with a Human-ecology master graduate from ELTE and a journalist from Telex. The event is also in English. I'll prepare some questions before I go there. I very much enjoy the discussion of these events afterward because we get to exchange, chllange ideas and the norms of sustainable actions and movements of Hungary.

This goal is linked to my personal financial goals. I am really bad at tracking my purhcases, creating a budget. I think keeping myself to stay within the budget isn't difficult for me but the 2 prior step are... Therefore, I started tracking my purchases over 3 months and I will set a realistic budget in September. We live in a difficult time when prices are rising. This is partly of why I put attention to my personal finances nowadays.

I volunteered 5 hours at Impact Hub Budapest as a Community Host. Impact Hub Budapest is a co-working office and an social entrepreneurship incubator in Budapest. It is part of the international Impact Hub Network. I have been volunteering since October 2021. I came here because I would like to be a kind of entrepreneur with a focus on food safety and I believe here I get the mentoring and network I need. As a Community Host, I welcome members and manage the office daily tasks. I can be here in the office and work on my projekt, Búza.

On Monday, I made a meal planning for the week from 2 youtube videos and a couple of articles. I think as a first try it wasn't so bad. I made a list of items to shop and incorporated veggies that had been in our fridge. Taking into account the ingredients already in our inventory made it easier to choose recipes. The meals I cooked tasted better, because I had a satisfaction from using old ingredients. One video suggested making a "master recipe list" which is a list of meals we cook often. I like that idea and added a new recipe that I made this week, which I'll definitely make again!

I have been mapping the green and civil organizations in Hungary, mainly in Budapest. I attended a couple of events which provides me with new information on the food system and its challenges. After each event, I normally am left with some notes I took. These notes help me continue my research and exploration of the hungarian food ecosystem or organisations, farm, and initiatives. I continue this process. I enjoy it a lot :)

I've been cooking meatless. Dairy products are more difficult to put aside, more specifially cheese.

I was researching the sustainability challenges of Hungary in the past month. I found out that the agriculture needs new generations to carry on farm businesses to be able to produce local products. If no new generation comes, Hungary will be strongly if not completely dependent on imported food products, despite having valuable and quality land and climate. Some hospitality establishments, mostly on the country side and some bigger cities, not Budapest, created café and restaurant concepts to promote local food and sustainability. I attended the Fenntarthatósági Konferencia (Sustainability Conference) at SIRHA 2022 which was an international food industry expo. I listened to like-minded people with inspiring stories of opening their sustainability food concept. I hope to join them one day and create my own that will inspire the next generation to promote local food system that is sustainable for the planet, the people working on it and also will educate the consumers on this topic.
