I think one way to examine and transform these assumptions in our life is think before purchase. We have to understand if the item a want or a need. And stop buying things that is a want. It could not only have negative impacts on people/animal, but also our saving/money. For example, one negative impact on people when you buy a well-known sport brand is environmental justice. I think some companies are still using child labor in developing countries in order to lower the cost of their products.

Speaking of my transportation behavior in Portland, I always take my car with me no matter where I go. I think car is just more convenient than bus in Portland. It takes about 25 min drive from my house to PSU, however, I have to spend almost 1hr to take the bus to school.

For last week, I bought a t-shirt that is eco-friendly for the very first time. It shows that the t-shirt uses no GMO seeds or toxic pesticides. And its benefits soil quality and biodiversity. In addition, this t-shirt is saving 27 gallons of water V.S. a conventional cotton t-shirt. It is 100% organic cotton and feels very comfy. I would say the quality is above average cotton t-shirt. And it was very cheap too, about $20 and the brand is Patagonia. I will definitely buy more eco-friendly t-shirt in the future!!

I love Patagonia and as a popular brand, it is eco-friendly. I know the company is very vocal about social justice and environmental sustainability. They also produce a lot of documentaries and articles that are really interesting and I always learn something new each time!

Since our topic is food this week, I choose not to waste any food I eat. For example, I used to throw away apple core, but now I try to eat everything from an apple except the seeds. And when we order take-out food, I try to finish all the food and not waste any of it. The other thing related to food is I’m thinking about grow some vegetables at home. However, it could be a challenge because I live in an apartment. I think tomatoes are easy to grow in pot, I would love to try it out.

This week my girlfriend and I are trying something new to reduce our energy usage. We used to work in a separated room, and now we are trying to work in a same space at home so we can just turn on one light and heater at a time. At first it works pretty well, however, when we are having a meeting call at the same time, I have to take my laptop and move to the other room. So, sometimes I have to move my stuff back and forth, which was not the best experience. But thinking of saving some money on electricity bills and also saving our planet, I guess I am willing to keep doing it.

I am trying to reduce the use of paper towel in my home. It seems pretty hard because we used to use paper towel more often than the reusable fabric towel to clean our house. The first step is stop using paper towel at the kitchen. I try to use only the fabric towel and it works! I will keep doing that so we can save money on purchasing paper towel and reduce our waste.
