This week I am remodeling our home, and it involved removing old cabinets that had water damage and were not functioning well anymore. The result was that the wood was not salvageable (it had warped badly and cracked in many places). After considering all my choices, I decided that it needed to go to the landfill so I used that as an opportunity to talk to them about their processes. I learned that if I removed all of the metal hardware from the cabinets, doors, and drawers, that the wood could be made into mulch or chips for landscaping and therefore repurposed and not wasted. I brought my cabinets there and recycled them.

This week I found a local beef farm (Pioneer Ranch) and bought an "intro box" from them which is a variety pack of meat. It is all organically grown with humane farming practices. They do not use antibiotics excessively and use recycled grains from local breweries for feeding the animals. This was the main part of dinner each night and was nice to know we were eating locally raised and sustainably raised beef. It was also way more fresh than most meat I've bought in store, overall it was a great experience and I will continue purchasing from them locally for a while. I was able to pick it up 10 miles away from my house too at their store near the farm, so it was never even shipped or transported beyond that!

This week I (by chance, not really intentionally) met a new neighbor in my community. We recently moved and have not really connected with any neighbors yet, but yesterday I was able to have a conversation outside with one of my neighbors and his son. It was nice to feel welcomed to the community having just recently moved back in to this area.

Although I don't use plastic water bottles regularly, it definitely happens a few times a week when I'm in a hurry. This week I made the conscious decision to use the same blender bottle all week for everything I was drinking on the go. Knowing that on average we as humans send 14 plastic bottles per week to the landfill is pretty sad and I will make an effort from now on to not use any unnecessary plastic bottles. I have a hydroflask which is re-usable for a very long time, and I have a blender bottle which I have been using for 5 years now and it is still in great shape. There is really no reason to be sending that much plastic to the landfill.

This week I planned my meals from Sunday to Friday. I do this pretty often to save money and make sure I always have food ready to eat. This week I tried to be more conscious of exactly how much of each ingredient I was buying (crock pot salsa chicken, rice, and green beans). I wanted to make sure that all of my meal preparation was going to be used and eaten. I also tried to pay a little bit more attention to the types of ingredients. I bought organic chicken instead of non organic. Although it was more expensive, after talking about some of the farming practice differences, it made sense to do it.

This week I decided to recycle EVERYTHING that I could. I usually am not good about making sure everything that can be recycled ends up in the right bin, so I did some research and paid more attention to what I was doing with waste. Bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard were what I started with. I made sure to keep everything as clean as possible to maximize the recyclability of the items. I was also careful to research things that should not be recycled.  Plastic bags are on the do not recycle list, which I did not previously know, so I took extra care to make sure that none of those went into the wrong bin.

This week I was able to complete the "explore my area" challenge. I went to a local trail on a 45 degree day so the snow had melted and was able to fully enjoy an area in my town called the River Trail along the Deschutes River. It was a several mile long loop with a bridge over the river in the middle. The short hike/exploration allowed me to consider the importance of areas like this and the environment that we live in. The River Trail had several signs posted throughout my hike with wildlife information, providing another reminder as to why these areas need to be maintained and preserved for our ecosystems to thrive.
