Montgomery Archambo-Pietsch 7/13/2022 10:11 PMFor my last eco challenge I decided to attempt to become a master recycler. The courses for Multnomah County (where I live) are limited to the winter which I plan to attend! In the mean time I took a course that was listed as an introduction to become a master recycler called Recycling 101. This course was very informative. I learned about Oregon recycling and government ordinances around recycling like Senate Bill 582 did things like create a state wide list of what can be recycled. As well as why recycling is important for Oregonians to do and the science of recycling things like plastic and metal among many other things to highlight some. It was a super cool course and I am super happy I took it and have a better understanding of recycling I plan to spread to my work-
Giovanni Simmons 7/13/2022 10:46 PMThis is really cool! Sounds like a great thing to learn because so many things are improperly recycled. I'll definitely look into this because I'd love to be able to learn all of this and spread the information to friends & family.

Montgomery Archambo-Pietsch 7/11/2022 11:52 PMThis week for my consumption Eco Challenge I decided to support local business and support a sharing economy. To support local business I went to the Portland Street Market and supported local food venders and some local honey stands. I also bought all my bread this week from a local bakery and did all my grocery shopping at Basics which is a grocery store that focus on sourcing from local farmers. I also decided to support a sharing while I didn't totally complete this action within the time frame I did plan for me and my friends to do a clothing swap. The friends I invited are other trans people so we are swapping pretransition clothes with each other to increase the amount of gender affirming clothes we have without having to buy anything. I have attached a picture of the clothes I will be swapping! -
Montgomery Archambo-Pietsch 7/06/2022 11:54 PMFor my fifth Eco Challenge I took public transportation to save gas. I chose this one because I wanted to cut down on my gas usage because of the high gas prices and one of my friends passion for me to learn more about the urban planning of Portland. I had to make room in my schedule for the extra time taking the bus takes. I made use of this time through reading as I rode (I am currently reading War and Peace so the weight of it is also keeping my core and arm strong). The bus has been on time and I am thankful to Portland transportation and the bus drivers for being on time and getting me where I need. It also connected me the my community by sharing the experience of being a bus rider and let me have some simple and nice interactions with people I wouldn't have otherwise. -
Montgomery Archambo-Pietsch 7/05/2022 12:14 AMFor my Eco Challenge this week I decided to pick up liter. I take walks around my neighborhood throughout the week so this week I decided to bring gloves and a bag to gather up waste in. I enjoyed this as sometimes my walks while helpful to being grounding can feel aimless and this gave me a sense of purpose as I moved around the neighborhood. I gathered all sorts of things but mostly cigarette butts and bottle remnants. I am someone who enjoys hiking and now I am doing to integrate the system of keeping liter picking up supplies with me in the future so I can start leaving places better then I found them.-
Lexi Silva 7/05/2022 8:25 AMHey!
I also decided on being more proactive with picking trash around me, more specifically whenever I spent time outside on this long weekend! I like how you mentioned the sense of purpose you felt on your walks when picking up someone else's trash. I can also relate to that feeling, that even though it's a small action, it's not only self-fulfilling but also fulfilling in a community sense! While going on my walks I found a lot of water bottles and more so pieces of wrappers and plastic left. Thanks for sharing!

Montgomery Archambo-Pietsch 7/01/2022 11:06 PMFor the fourth eco-challenge I did two that I felt work well together. I used a reusable bottle and said no to plastic. I used reusable bags to go shopping in this week and did not get takeout food to avoid the plastic containers they come in. My biggest impact though was bringing a cup to work for my coffee instead of getting a new disposable coffee cup every day. It also allows me to go longer without a refill as my new reusable mug holds more liquid.

Montgomery Archambo-Pietsch 6/28/2022 10:30 PMMy third Echo Challenge was to shop organically for dinner. I made a pasta with organic cheese and tomatoes I got from the farmers market along with some organic chicken. I also picked up some other produce at the farmers market for my week like peaches and cucumbers. Trying to use my food purchase power to invoke positive climate change was a good grounding experience to remind myself why it is important to pick the organic and local options. It also resulted in a lovely meal and conversation with my roommate. -
Montgomery Archambo-Pietsch 6/22/2022 7:36 PMFor my second challenge I chose to practice gratitude for the earth. Today I went on a walk and found somewhere to sit and watch the environment. I watched two birds fly around and interact with each other and play. I then meditated about the land and being thankful for the watershed I live next to and all the life it supports it different kinds of ways.-
Kevanna Doolittle 6/23/2022 9:24 AMGood morning Monty,
Thank you for sharing your eco-challenge. I enjoy watching birds fly around and I often see squirrels playing in trees at my apartment complex.
I'm glad you had time to practice gratitude for the earth!

Montgomery Archambo-Pietsch 6/21/2022 1:37 AMFor my first challenge I started with something I was familiar with which was discussing sustainability with others. I decided to do this with my book club as we are currently reading "Staying with the Trouble" by Donna Haraway. The book is about living and dying with a planet under going the effects of climate change and how to not fall into either safety net of oblivious hope and crushing despair. We discuss the sustainability and changes she writes about in each chapter and how we implant this into our lives or ways it has already appeared to us.
